When you refresh Firefox, your old data is stored in a folder on your desktop called Old Firefox Data. The information in there can be restored to your Firefox profile.

When I try to restore the bookmarks, I get the message "unable to process backup file". Any suggestions?

Restore them by moving the places.sqlite file from the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop into your current Firefox profile.
