How can I switch from AOL Desktop Gold to Thunderbird AND retain all current ingoing/outgoing emails

I need to keep all existing incoming/outoing emails on my laptop so I can refer to them as needed. I'm afraid of losing them if just switch from AOL Desktop Gold to Thunderbird without taking certain special precautions. How do I prevent that disaster from happening?
