hi richard, you're likely hitting https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1664843. since you seem to be able to consistently reproduce the problem, would you be willing to run the tool from https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/ to get us en exact regression range of when this issue was introduced? this would make it much more easy and quick for developers to fix any newly introduced bugs...

Thanks for assisting. In principle yes sure. I downloaded mozregression, but in practice I'm pretty clueeless on how it actually works. I clicked on the [S] run a sinle build and got this after it tried to open in 'nightly mode':

thanks richard and sorry for being sparse on the instructions (there would also be an explanatory howto video on https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/).

please follow these steps in the mozregression tool:

• click on the scissors icon (run a new bisection)
• in the "basic configuration" window of the wizard you can enter "https://maps.google.com" or a particular other link to page that's consistently crashing into the URL field. you can leave all other fields as they are and click next.
• leave the profile selection window as is and click next
• in "build selection" change the last known good build to release and then version "78". then click finish
• now firefox will start to download and open a series of builds. click either good or bad in the tool for each build depending on if they are crashing on google maps or not.
• this process will continue until you have narrowed down the regression range and hopefully end up on the exact change in the firefox codebase that has introduced the problem.
• then copy/paste the last section of the log file into a reply here on the forum (like you already did for your first run of the tool)

hm, still not exactly what i'd expect since according to crash data the problem should have started somewhere around 2020-07-05 and the build you've ended up on is from a couple of weeks later. during testing, did the tool provide firefox versions where some were crashing and some (earlier) versions that were not crashing on google maps?

oh this just appears to show the first step. a firefox test build should have opened up at this point where you can check if google maps is crashing - depending on that you'd click "good" (=no crash) or "bad" (=crash) after switching back to the mozregression tool. the tool should then provide further builds to test until you end up with a final regression range like pictured in my prior screenshot.

mozilla is planning to fix this problem in a firefox 81.0.1 update - that's likely going to be released on thursday *fingers crossed*

hi, yes the fix made it to firefox 81.0.1 and according to our data has worked as the crash volume has noticeably reduced.

have you updated to the current firefox (82.0 atm) yet and is the crash still happening in the same circumstances while trying to open google maps? if yes, can you please provide a current crash report from the "submitted" section of about:crashes?
