trying to set up new Gmail account in Thunderbird gives 'Unable to log in at server' error.
A few days ago Thunderbird stopped updating the content of the Inbox for my Gmail account. The account was still able to send messages, but gave an error saving a copy to the Sent folder. I tried a few things to remedy the problem without success. Then I tried removing the account from Thunderbird and setting it up anew. To set it up, I used File...New... Existing Mail Account... I filled in the 'Set Up Your Existing Email Address' page with my name, email address and password and clicked Continue. The page refreshed with a 'Configuration found in Mozilla ISP database'. When I clicked Done, I got an error 'Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password.' I verified my password by logging into Google through a browser interface. My online searches for a solution have not turned up anything that seems to fit my situation. I would appreciate guidance for resolving this.

If you are using ESET/NOD32 security/AV then probability is very high it is causing your problems. According to ESET forums, you should temporarily disable SSL on ESET until they solve the problem per https://support.eset.com/en/kb3126-disable-ssl-filtering-in-eset-windows-products?ref=esf - the problem is being reported by dozens of users https://forum.eset.com/topic/26517-problems-with-thunderbird-and-imaps/ https://forum.eset.com/discover/

The problem was indeed ESET and the solution you directed me to did the trick. Thank you!
Would you be so kind to select the comment by Wayne Mery as a 'Chosen solution' as this makes it easier for others to locate the info. Cheers.
