I have been using Thunderbird for years on my old computer but how do I import my address book from old to new computer please - I use gmail. Please give me detailed instructions as I am not a computer technician.

Your thunderbird addressbook is named abook.sqlite and can be imported at tools>import. Your gmail addressbook can be added at the addressbook menu and select to add a cardDAV addressbook. Then use your gmail address to set it up.
