I downloaded Firefox and it's working fine. Then I downloaded SEOquake but could not use it (and no icon on the bottom either). It seems I don't have software required to open .xpi files. Any suggestions?

Try installing it via this approved add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/seoquake-seo-extension/

If you download and save an extension then you can use File > Open File to install the extension locally
