keyboard shortcut for a "preferences" detail setting
Some websites I often use are hard to read in their own colors, so I go to "edit -> preferences -> content -> colors" and uncheck "allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above". Other websites need this setting checked to display correctly. Can I establish a keyboard shortcut for this setting?

Specifically for that and because it can be changed via the options, you can create a toolbar button to do that.
Custom Toolbar Buttons Maker select "Toggle Page Colors", install, move custom button to toolbar. Toggles preferences, removes some but not all images (loses the entire mozillaZine banner exactly same as the preference). Another button that can be included is "Page Fonts", which toggles page fonts between your colors and the web page's colors. Another button that may be needed to read some pages is "Toggle Styles" to toggle CSS styling off or back on.

You can also use the PrefBar extension that has a toolbar button to toggle the colors among others.
You can assign a keyboard shortcut to buttons with that extension and create your own buttons.
Thank you, that did it! The addon i installed was "Toolkbar Buttons 1.0", then I right clicked on the menubar, chosed "customize", and I dragged the symbol named "Page Colors" (quite at the end of the collection) into the toolbar.
