I keep getting "free downloads" for various video players, games; are these viruses or legitimate? They take up the whole screen and appear without warning. I keep having to delete them and sometimes they persist until I sign out and reboot.

hello, those might be triggered by adware on your pc. please try these steps:

  1. reset firefox (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
  2. afterwards go to firefox > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
  3. run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner.
  4. update your plugins (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).
