I move e-mails to different folders, not the folders are still there but they are empty. Where did my e-mails go?

The question pretty well sums it up. The e-mails I save in different folders mysteriously disappear. Does this have anything to do with compression of files? I need to recover these e-mails as they have receipts for purchases.
