You'll have to ask TurboTax about that issue, I don't see updates specifically mentioned in their System Requirements page.

Chances are they use ActiveX controls for handling their updates, which rules out using basically any browser except for IE. But I am curious how they handle that on a Mac?

You can't. As the-edmeister said it has to do with ActiveX controls. When you go to MS's Updates page it scans for the ActiveX control. If you don't have it you can't update any MS program.

Just another way MS keeps annoying people.
