I don't do coding, so this is fairly gibberish to me in terms of what I need to do to fix it. Any help appreciated. Thnx.

looks to me like you do not have write privileges for the preference file. But that is just silly unless you have a weird location for the profile, like not in your C:\user folders.

I'm fairly certain it is not a permission problem, but I did check, so thnx. When I set up the new account, Thunderbird looks as though it is running a script/compacting. Does not stop until I close Thunderbird and then, when I reopen, the account is gone.

My Thunderbird prefs.js says Invalid character 800A03F6 Microsoft JScript compilation error

Anything?

you set up a new account and it writes the changes to the config.js file. Given most of that stuff is about XPI file (that is add-ons) it is not all that relevant. Seriously I think you need to ask the portable apps people not us, they have their own support forum and I am sure this will be a familiar problem for them,
