Suddenly TB doesn't sign me out after a session, so permanently signed on. Can't see any change to a/c settings.

Always TB asks for my p/w to show new messages every time I start it up. Last day or so it's kept me signed on between sessions, which is alarming and doesn't seem reversible. A/c settings are as before, showing that password is my normal authentification method.

Sounds like the box for Thunderbird to remember your email password got checked. You can remove the saved passwords if you want. From the Menu Bar select Tools-Options-Security-Passwords-Saved Passwords

Find the passwords you want to remove and delete them.

Restart Thunderbird and do not check the box for Thunderbird to remember the password when the login dialog box appears.

No menu bar? Press the alt key.
