When I try streaming movies from Amazon Prime Instant Videos in Firefox both the audio and video are very choppy. I have already tried turning off hardware acceleration as I was frequently getting error messages that a Silverlight Plugin was Unresponsive.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to Troubleshoot the issue and to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
