Of late, I cannot get Firefox to display documents in (pdf) format. Why is this?

I used to be able to view and print documents in (pdf) using Firefox browser. A few weeks ago, when I did what I've always done, to view documents in (pdf), Word Pad window was displayed. There was no selection in that window to display a (pdf) format.

You need Acrobat Reader or Foxit reader, i mean a third-part pdf reader

I tried the link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings which resolved the issue. Now the pdf viewing is back to normal. Still don't know what caused the process to be inoperable.
