running win7 and outlook express. (via zexpress software). Have archived thousands of e-mails & folders over the years that I cannot afford to lose. If I switch to t-bird, can I import all my OE data?.

I have never heard of the product before, but I assume, like Windows professional version, it is running the software in a virtual machine. If that is the case, automatic upgrade is almost certainly not going to work. The only way to be sure is to actually try the import. If Thunderbird detects outlook express, then it will import from it.

Your alternatives are not so great. is your using a english version of outlook express the undbx program I discuss here may help, but it is a command line utility.

Your wab file ( address book) can be imported to the windows address book on later versions of windows rather than use dawn as I originally suggested. Thunderbird can then be instructed to use the Windows address book. See http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/windows-contacts.html
