The boxes to maximize, minimize firefox have disappeared. How do I get them back? or how do I minimize firefox now?

Chosen solution

You seem to be using a Fedora Firefox version from the repositories of your Linux distribution. Maybe that version behaves differently than the official version or the control buttons aren't visible for other reasons.

Do you have the title bar or menu bar visible? If these bars are hidden then these button will appear on the Tab bar. If you use a userChrome.css file then the code in this file might not be compatible with the current Firefox release.
