Info that certain plugins will no longer work, BEFORE updating Thunderbird

Hi, I use Thunderbird since years and I really appriciate all the hard work you guys invest into that great project! Thanks for that, and keep going!

I have the following issue, and I think every Thunderbird user has it as well: after a update of Thunderbird to a higher version, a bunch of plugins and addons won't work anymore, either for month, or worst case never ever at all. For instance: after updating to version 103.3.0 Thunderbird has a irritating new look and user Interface and a fresh look for items and buttons, but the addons "TbSync" and "CardDAV provider" dosn't work anymore, so it is not possible to sync calendars and contacts anymore. (Just great! Thanks! )


I am not even sure if there is a possibility at the internet or any website, to somewhere check first which add ons won't work after the a update (!?).

Could you please, incorporate a "plugin and addon check" into the Thunderbird update routine that WARNS BEFORE the update is run, that the plugins won't work anymore afterwards.

I don't mean a non-discript warnung: "Hey, 'some' plugins might not work afterwards, but we won't tell you which of your installed plugins will be crippled!" I would like a dedicated warning which of the installed plugins won't work anymore:

"After update to version yxxc the following installed plugins and addons won't work anymore: Call DAVProvider, TbSync, Quicktext... Category Manager, etc. Do you want to proceed with the update?"

Or at least provide a pop up with a link to any site that might list the plugins/ addons that won't work afterwards, so that the users can check and decide obout the risk of running the upgrade and decide to stop it.

I share your occasional frustration, but it is important to remember that addon developers are independent individuals, working as their time and commitment permits to maintain addons. Your best bet is to check the developer's site as linked from each addon to see what level is supported prior to doing an upgrade.

thanks for your answer.

That's what I somehow "feared". To have to check 16 developer websites and estimate if their plugins might not work after the major Thunderbird update.


I think I rather stick to my workaround

1) use thunderbird portable only 2) make a safety copy of the Thunderbird portable folder before running a thunderbird update

Another possibility is to also run a copy of the beta release. The two can coexist and this gives you a chance to verify addons you want in the release version.
