I am currently using Firefox 7.0.1 and at the moment it's eating more than 400 MB of RAM. I am not the first user who has this problem.

For FF 3.x.x the usual amount was 200 MB (like after 30 minutes of browsing). Since then, with every new version, Firefox is eating a lot more resources.

Have a look at high memory usage that includes some tips

That was just a temporary solution... i have to do that every time (about:memory).

Is there a more permanent solution?

Firefox 3.6 is still supported so you could for a while longer use that

The amount of memory used may not be high, depending on what you have open and what you are doing. Looking at about:memory should help you see which sites are using up a lot of memory.

How much RAM is installed in your computer ?

2 GB ... c'mon... 400-500 MB is way too much for a browser...

EDIT: ok... as far as i can see Firefox keeps some websites loaded into memory even though they are not used anymore (tabs are closed) That is where the memory is being "used". For what... no idea... maybe for fast reopening of that tab (like Recently Closed Tabs from History menu).

Any ideas on how i can clear the no longer used websites from the memory? I would prefer a key for about:config :)

Thanks.

The about:memory has buttons for doing that. If you find websites that will not clear possibly some of the developers would be interested in what you find.
