Bookmarks icon disappears from the Navigation Toolbar

There are two different bookmarks icons available for the Navigation Toolbar:

   – a drop-down list version (distinguishable by its down-arrow)
   – a panel version that opens the Bookmarks panel on the left side of the screen

The panel version works just fine for me if I drag it onto my Navigation Toolbar from the Customize Toolbar menu, but I prefer the drop-down list version. When I put the drop-down list version onto my Navigation Toolbar, it seems to work at first. However, when I click "Done" on the Customize Toolbar menu, the Bookmarks icon (drop-down list version) disappears!

Removing and adding it does not solve the problem. Choosing "Restore Default Set" does not solve the problem, even though the drop-down list version is part of the default set.

Side notes: 1) The Reload and Stop icons also disappear, but I expect that, since they effectively merge into the location bar. 2) Other odd behavior: If I put the panel version icon immediately to the left or right of the Reload, then the Reload icon remains in the Navigation Toolbar (to the right of the location bar). The Stop icon does not exhibit this behavior; it always disappears. After playing around for a bit, I ended up in a situation where the Reload icon would never disappear, no matter which icon was next to it. I was only able to stop this behavior by choosing "Restore Default Set".

Have you tried deleting a possibly corrupt localstore.rdf file.

I just deleted localstore.rdf and let Firefox generate a new one, but the problem persists.

This might be a problem with the way Ubuntu modifies Firefox.

Does disabling Ubuntu Firefox Modifications has any effect?

Note that you will only see the Bookmarks Menu button with the drop-down list when the menu bar is hidden and Ubuntu displays window menus in the control bar at the top of the screen with the switch to the Unity window manager.

Thanks, that partially solved my problem. Now I have the bookmarks icon in Windows 8.1 again, but still not in Ubuntu 12.04. (I use the same Firefox profile for both.)

That is not recommended because Firefox will initialize a profile if it detects that this profile has been started the last time with a different Firefox version (compatibility.ini).
