Firefox crashes everytime I try to open a new tab
Since today, Firefox crashes every time without fail if I open a new tab (either using keyboard shortcut or the new tab button). This more or less makes firefox unusable. I tried to reinstall but didnt work. I also attempted to disable all addons. I'm not sure if I have to uninstall a plugin?
Note: Opening an link from another page does not result in a crash.

Hello,
Could you try a few things.
1) Try to start in safe mode to do so: Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
- Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
- On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
2) If That does not work i would say to do a clean install:
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
- Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
Please report back to say if this helped you!
Thank you.
Thanks for the reply.
As instructed, 1. Attempted starting in safe mode. It still crashes. 2. Attempting reinstalling as instructed. It still crashes.

Did you follow the steps for the clean install exactly, and remove the folders as well? Not just reinstall but completely remove firefox from your PC then reinstall

I deleted the firefox folder from program files folder.
Hey, When you did the clean install did you re-download any Themes,Extensions, or add ons?
Nope. I am using Sync by the way. Not sure if that matters.
I tried creating a new profile, and it did not crash. But that does not help, cos my entire sync is gone for a toss.
Does this happen when you open a new tab using a link, or when you press the new tab button.
What is your about:newtab setting?
The crash report flagged these programs;
avcuf32.dll = BitDefender
igd10umd32.dll = Intel(R) Graphics Technology
icudt52.dll = International Components for Unicode
Download the full installers for the above.
If there is still a problem, disable BitDefender, then check.
Hey,
IF what FredMcD Posted does not work could you try a clean install with out Sync and see if that works

Thanks. Bitdefender was the issue. I uninstalled Bitdefender, restarted PC and problem was gone. I have now reinstalled BitDefender and it is working fine now.
Should I expect this problem to come back? Reinstalling every now and then is a ridiculous solution.

Coming back to this. The crash is back.
I edited the newTab config and modified to - about:blank. It does not crash. So crash occurs when the browser.newtab.url config is about:newtab.
I want the new tab page, it shows the pages that I visit regularly!
Endret
Can you post the IDs of recent crash report?
If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that have a "bp-" prefix:

You can find the Report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help > Troubleshooting Information" page (about:support).
- Click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.
If necessary then you can open about: pages via the location/address bar. If the "bp-" prefix is missing then click its line on the about:crashes page to submit the crash report and the crash report will get a "bp-" prefix (do not add it yourself).
