Hi all,

I'm having trouble to open Firefox. Work on OS X 10.10 Tried to completely remove Firefox from iMac and reinstall it > installation is finishing but crashes when trying to launch from Application folder > Crash ID: bp-47d448d5-13dc-45ca-a5c1-d84a42150515 Tried to launch it in safe mode > crashes straight away when trying to launch from Application folder > Crash ID: bp-591c3e57-64aa-42ee-94f5-58e282150515 Tried to create a new profile > crashes when trying to launch from Application folder

But, if I launch from the Profil Manager it works.

Is there a solution to that issue or am I condemned to start it from Profile Manager/use another browser?

Thank you! Sophie

I can't find troubleshooting information item or open the .xpi file automatically downloaded.

Hi sophie.auzuret, Sorry you are having problems.

The CrashIDs are not generating crash signatures that I understand.

However if you start ok from the profilemanager that suggests your default profile was somehow corrupt or a problem for some other reason.

Do NOT do this yet. The profile manager dialogue probably has a tick box to select to start the selected profile without asking again. So it is easy to revert to starting normally.

What is likely to concern you most is any important information your original Firefox install had, bookmarks, passwords etc. This sort of information is stored in the Firefox profile. You will likely now have multiple profiles in existence (even more if it is a multi user machine).

Any profile folders created by Firefox will have a name that starts with some random looking characters, and will then end with default or some other name you chose when using the profile manager. Have a look for your profile folders. They may be expected to be in one of these locations

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>
  • ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>

As explained in

This article has advice on transfering data between profiles

Read the articles, search for profiles and post back with how you get on. We will give further info on what to do next when we know more about what you find, and what you have lost.

Hi,

Thank you for these informations. I don't have any bookmarks left but it doesn't really matter, and I don't save my passwords ;)

At the moment, there are only 2 profiles: Default and the new one I created - I've attached screenshot of the profiles' folders.

+I found out how to access The Troubleshooting Information tab so I'm copying below the informations from that (as you were asking for it when I created the post).

Thank you, Sophie

if you are happy with the new profile you may use the checkbox mentioned in my first post to start with that profile without using the profile manager.

You say you do not have any bookmarks left. If you did have bookmarks it may be possible to recover them from automated backups in the profiles. Take care if trying that. Always backup the database file places.sqlite before attempting any restores or imports of bookmarks, that avoids problems if you overwrite it incorrectly and need to get back to where you were previously.

If you need further help with trying to restore bookmarks please say so.

It may be necessary to edit either Firefox file file profiles.ini or your startup shortcut. I use Linux or occasionally Windows but not Macs. The file "profiles.ini" is normally not edited manually as the profile manager itself usually makes the required changes. As long as your application folder is using the same path with the same file profiles.ini as when you manually use the profile manager the checkbox option should make the application folder use the same profile. Again if you need further help with this please say so. See also

Hi,

Starting without the Profile Manager still leads to crash so I'll just keep using it :/

Thank you for your help!

Hi Sophie, If Firefox runs when started from the profile manager it should be easy to sort it out to run without using the profile manager.

First step check which profile Firefox is actually using. Make a note of it. With Firefox running after starting with the profile manager visit the troubleshooting page and use the option open the Profile folder. Make a careful note of the folder name and path.

You should be able to use the checkbox on the profile manager to always start with that profile. Firefox should tn work ok without crashing and without needing he profile manager. Repeat the steps again ti confirm which profile is in use.

Does that work ?
