I am trying to update Java 8U45 in Firefox 39.0 for windows 8.1. The udpdate will not complete. I keep getting an error message 1603. What should I do?
I have Firefox 39.0. The Next Generation Java Plug-in 11.45.2 for Mozilla browsers shows it is vulnerable. When I try to update my plugin on Firefox to the Java version 8 update 51, it downloads and will try to install, but will not complete the install. I get the error message 1603. I am trying to use the 32 bit online version.

Try to uninstall Java and download and install the full offline Java 8u51 installer.
You can find the latest 32 bit Java versions on the Oracle website.
See Java Platform > Java SE 8u51 (JRE Download;32 bit for Windows)

Oracle says "The root causes of these errors are under investigation." Source: http://java.com/en/download/help/error_1603.xml
Do you want to try the "offline" installer (regular, not 64-bit, since Firefox can't use the 64-bit version): http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
I saw some other comments on the following page, but hopefully the offline installer will work around the issue: http://www.adminarsenal.com/admin-arsenal-blog/beat-java-error-1603-when-deploying
Thank you to cor-el and also to jscher2000. I tried the "offline" installer, regular 32-bit download and it worked! It included a process to detect and uninstall older versions of Java 8U45. You were very helpful... Linda60
