Firefox 40 is driving me crazy hanging & crashing everytime I close a tab. Also after every reboot it tells me it cant sync & asks for my password again. All passwords, facebook etc are also lost. Iv tried refresh. Iv tried uninstalling & reinstalling a fresh copy. In about:crashes it is not submitting any crash reports. in profile folder, there is no places.sqlite-journal file. There is also no Pref folder, just a Pref java file. Nothing works & its driving me crazzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyy!!!!!

I might suggest trying to start Firefox with a new profile and replacing a new profile with the files you want to keep from the old profile:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do you see any passwords in the Password Manager?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords"

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes".

  • do not clear the Passwords
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Check that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"
