Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues.
You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape: Adobe Reader Version 2015.010.20060 Note: McAfee Security is offered in the download.
Why 44?
Does/did Firefox 45 not work as well?
edit: changed url from 45.0 to 45.0.2
Create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

@cor-el: Why 44? It was what popped up when using IE to browse for an older version. Will try making new profile 46 when home tonight, else may go for 45.something Got the same problem on my work computer this morning running W8.1 Enterprise, this time reinstalled 45.1.0 and all thing works fine again.
@FredMcD: Can't find an easy way to get rid of older plugins (no remove button) . Don't have this Adobe PDF plugin om other computer with issue
As for any Firefox I use, I have active addons NoScrict, AdBlock Plus, Block site, RefreshBlocker, ShareMeNot, Lightbeam and Flash Video Downloader.
Note that you should only install Firefox from the official Mozilla server, so always be cautious if you search internet as you may end up with the Firefox version that comes with unwanted extras (malware).
