When typing letters the flashing place mark is no longer there;how do I get it back?

When typing (like right now typing this question) there is a flashing black linear bar that show the place where I'm currently typing. A few days ago this disappeared from the messages I'm typing on thunderbird to be sent (or as reply or forwards). But the bar is present for everything else including what I'm typing right now. What happened and how do I restore the place bar in thunderbird?

have you restarted Thunderbird? I suggest you do if you have not.
