Delete messages from local storage ONLY

In Settings, "Synchronisation & Storage", I have the option to "Delete messages older than...", but this applies to BOTH the server AND local storage. I want to limit the volume of mail on my (laptop) local storage to only the most recent, but KEEP older messages on the server. How do I do this?

IMAP.

IMAP is server based. If you delete from the server or Thunderbird it is gone. You could create a new folder or folders on the server to move your keeper messages into and then unsubscribe to those folders in Thunderbird so you do not see them.

Yes, thanks, I know it's server-based. But my messages are also saved locally. I just thought Mozilla would have created a function to "subscribe" to date-related messages similarly to folders. My central office TB has years of mail on it, in an organised, structured, global folder system. There's no reason I should have all of these on my laptop or server-based OS where nothing older than a couple of weeks is required.

Google IMAP and see how it works. It is a standard email protocol and thunderbird follows it.
