Mail Disappearing from Thunderbird inbox

All my mail stored in my Thuderbird inbox from this morning back to 31.03.21 has disappeared and on restarting Thunderbird I get a message informing me that 'the messages you have deleted can be purged from the disk saving 301 MB of space' (I haven't deleted any messages and the trash and deleted message folders don not contain the missing mails).

Can anybody help me recover this mail?

Update: I have contacted my server and they have restored the folder from backups, so the situation is resolved - but they speculate that it was the result of a purge by Thunderbird, so still an issue with the program?
