Services like outlook.com and gmail automatically copy sent messages to a folder, so you should uncheck 'Place a copy in' in the Copies & Folders section of Account Settings. For outlook.com, if this is a personal account, not Office 365, right-click the (IMAP) account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe, Refresh, and check the box for the Sent folder.

If it's an Office365 account, are you connecting with the help of an add-on like Owl or ExQuilla? Office365 accounts seem to require some attention by the account administrator to enable and configure smtp service.
