Why does my Firefox page say untitled and not work?

If Firefox is not opened for an extended period of time (several hours or more), once opened the page is blank and says "Untitled". I am unable to refresh or go to any other website. I have tried several things to correct this : open a new tab, refresh the network, unplug the modem and refresh the network list. Nothing works except restarting the computer. Is there any way to fix this? Thank you.

Is the computer closing down and restarting whilst left unattended ?

Is the computer running other tasks in the background eg downloading, security upgrades/scans, or disk indexing ?
