when i try to open firefox, i get the following a popup that says my system is infected and i am directed to purchase win 7 anti virus program. this popup stops the firefox load reiterating that a virus is in my computer. The catch is that it says for $60 i can purchase the fix. Then another popup comes up "Win 7 Antivirus 2012 ALERT" - System integrity threat! . . . it ask if you want to block the threat - yes/no. selecting no does nothing but removes the popup for a few moments; if yes is selected, you are directed to a purchase page.

That is malware masquerading as anti-malware. The following gives you information about the problem and a link to Malwarebytes to download, install, update and run Malwarebytes.

  • http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012. It is important to read this article to fully understand what you need to do in order to rid your system of this malware.
  • NOTE: This malware may prohibit you from going to the above link or to any other site to get information or download tools to clean your system (that information is in the article above). If so, you need to use a non-infected computer to
    1. read the article
    2. download Malwarebytes and any other suggested tools, then
    3. transfer Malwarebytes and other tools needed to your system on a USB/thumb/pin/flash/jump drive to the infected system.
