how can I import Firefox prefs from Win7 to to Win8 Firefox/Nightly

I've copied my preferences from my old computer running Win 7 into %appdata%\mozilla\firefox\profiles on my new computer running Win 8. I have Firefox and Nightly installed on my new computer but I cannot get them to see my old prefs. If I rename the new default prefs to .old, Firefox still won't recognize the imported Win7 preferences.
