Previous versions brought up only the password prompt. ow it brings up the prompt with the main email screen. Prefer this screen not displayed until pw entered

The new situation you describe is the default option for Thunderbird.

I have used the Startup Master addon to achieve two different things. One is to suppress multiple password prompts, the other is to prevent display of my email folders until the correct password had been entered.
