re :I use for many years Mozilla Firefox for my e-mails

I think you mean Thunderbird, not Firefox :) Firefox is a browser; Thunderbird is an email client. They are two different programs.

re :I request another password reset - the former failed The question implies you have logged on to your gmail webmail account using a browser and reset the password. But the description section where you enter information about the problem regarding password has no information on that topic. Do you have a problem with Thunderbird accessing the gmail server or can you download and send emails ok?

re :....spell checks. These disapeeared all of a sudden but I don't succed reloading them, The information in the description section does not appear to have anything to do with the question instead it is talking about spellcheck and dictionaries.

What dictionaries do you see in the 'Add-ons Manager'?

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons'

Addons Manager opens in a new tab

  • select the bottom icon on left side to show what dictionaries are installed.
  • Make sure the window is wide enough so all information about each dictionary is fully displayed.
  • Post an image showing the dictionaries so the forum can see what you have got installed.

What version of Thunderbird are you using? What language version of Thunderbird are you using? What OS ?

First of all many thanks for this reply and I'll try to answer your questions-remarks. 1) I meant indeed Thunderbird. 2) I nave no problems at all with sending and receiving e-mails 3) My language version of Thunderbird is Hebrew - but I don't know where to find neither the version of my Thunderbird nor what OS means. Whereas for the bottom icon on left side to show what dictionaries are installed it says: Hebrew - in Hebrew , ENG -for English, DEU - for German, FRA - for French, NLD- for Dutch. Nevertheless none of them works. Although before sending a mail- in whatever language -the spell check box appears but empty - and even the ligne for the employed language in it is empty. And I repeat that until shortly all these worked perfectly. But I don't have any pictures of dictionnaries. Please note also that I am 95 years old and English is not my mother tongue Hoping for more kind instructions I remain sincerely yours Nathan Ben-Brith >bbnathan.nbb@gmail.com>

How to find out what version of Thunderbird you are using: In Thunderbird Help > About Thunderbird The current version is 52.8.0

What does OS mean ? OS stands for Operating System. Such as 'Windows 10' or 'MAC Sierra' or 'Linux Ubuntu'

re: dictionaries in the Addons Manager tab Are any of them greyed out which would mean they are disabled? If yes, click on the 'Enable' button

Please post the following and it will tell the forum what dictionaries and versions you have installed.

In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Do Not select the checkbox to show account names
  • Click on 'Copy Text to clipboard' button
  • In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste'.

See images as help.

Once more thank you for this reply and excuse the delay in my response. This is due to the facs that I am old and that all my Thunderbird info and items are in Hebrew whereas your instructions come in English. Thus it takes me time until I find the corresponding Hebrew terms to your English ones. Now to the points: 1) my OS is Windows 8.1 2) my Thunderbird version is 60.0.1 ( it updates itself automatically) 3) I am not sure that I know what are "Addons Manager Tab". But if you mean the bottom icon on left side to show what dictionaries are installed -none of them is grey but black. Besides this I would'nt know where to find "enable" button. 4) I want to add to your former question regarding troubles in sending e- mails: There occur sometimes difficulties in copying the outgoing mail to the "outgone" folder - taking time but eventually succeeding.

re :my Thunderbird version is 60.0.1

The current version is 52.8.0, so you may be on a beta channel update.

It is possible the dictionaries need to be updated to work with version 60.0.1

Post information as described below and I'll have a look at the dictionary versions.

In Thunderbird
  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Do Not select the checkbox to show account names
  • Click on 'Copy Text to clipboard' button
  • In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste'.

I am sorry-although thankful-that I cannot follow your advice because my Thunderbird manual is in Hebrew; meaning the Help menu does not equal your English one. In one of your former answers-advises I was asked to copy and patch something "for this forum" but was not able to do it. Therefore I prefer to tell herunder once more my problem/difficulty; My OS is "Windows 8.1" My actual Thunderbird version is 60.0.1, updated lately automatically. Since this update occured my dictionnaries for Hebrew, English, German, French and Dutch do not work any more, although I continue using these languages - with their very special letters/signs - by choosing them from the left bottom icon. Moreover when sending a mail, the spellcheck box appears - but empty.

In one of your former answers was written:

"The current version is 52.8.0, so you may be on a beta channel update. It is possible the dictionaries need to be updated to work with version 60.0.1"

I do hope that this will enable you to find a solution for my difficullty Many thanks in advance Sincerly yours Nathan Ben-Brith in Israel, e-mail address: bbnathan.nbb@gmail.com P.S. Would it be possible/right/feasable to retun me to version 52.8.0?

Suggest you first locate the dictionaries and see what version you are using. Then see if there has been an update for those dictionaries. It is possible those dictionaries are not designed to work with version 60.

If those dictionaries cannot work with verion 60, then uninstall Thunderbird and get a fresh download to install from this link. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Scroll down until you see 'Hebrew', then click on the download for 'Windows'.

I checked the English dictionary- it is not compatible with the 60.0.1 version. Thus I understand that I have to delete my actual Thunderbirf and them reload the formr version. But before doing so I want to save somewhere on my computer at least my Address book. How?

more options

All your mail accounts and address books etc are stored in your thunderbird profile folders. They are not part of the actual program which is installed in a different place. Uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling Thunderbird should not effect your Profile.

However, it is a good idea to have a backup, so now is a good time to do it.

To do a full backup of everything. Make sure Thunderbird is closed. Make sure hidden files and folders are visible:

Backup the 'Thunderbird' folder in this location and you will have a backup of everything.

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\

If you only want to backup the 'Address Books'.

  • click on 'Address Book'
  • select an address book eg: 'Personal Address Book'
  • 'Tools' > 'Export'
  • Choose where to save.
  • 'Save as type' : 'LDIF' ( or 'Comma Separated .csv file')
  • Click on 'Save'

To uninstall Thunderbird. Use the computer 'Control Panel' > 'Programs and Features' select 'Mozilla Thunderbird' and click on 'Uninstall'

Thank you for your advice- unfortunately I am unable to do as proposed in your link Thus I'll have to be patint until one of my grandsons shall take the time coming for a visit. Then I'll show him all your propositions hoping that he'll know how to applicate them in order to save everything, then uninstall Thunderbird and reload the former version. Meanwhile and until then I won't bother you any more but hopefully will tell you then that my problems were solved. Once more thanks Nathan Ben Brith in Israel
