How do I configure "Sort by date" for actual chronological order.

Currently,when I do "Sort by date" 6/5/2013 will proceed 7/5/2014. I would like to have it sort in the correct order. That would be;Sort as Year, Month, Day. But, displayed as Month, Day, Year.
