Desktop icon indicates new messages have arrived, but do not appear anywhere. Please help.

The Thunderbird alias on my desktop continues to indicate unread messages (numerals appear), but there are no new messages in my inbox. All have been opened, but the numbers remain. Are they there but unseen or is this a glitch of some sort?

right click the folder, select properties and the repair button. Better?
