Firefox 40.0.2 crashes or freezes dozens of times a day
Firefox 40.0.2 crashes or freezes dozens of times a day. There are too many crashes to list, and they aren't picked up by Mozilla's servers anymore.
I am using Windows XP, though sometimes Firefox crashes on Windows 7 as well.
My extensions and plugins are:
- McAfee Virtual Technician
- DivX VOD Helper
- OpenH264 Video Codec
- Adobe Acrobat
- Java Deployment Toolkit
- FEBE
I also used SuperAntiSpyware, a virus scan tool that my mom recommended, and it also removed critical data from the Crash Reporter. A year ago, I also deleted critical add-ons that made Firefox stable; I was not fully awake at the time so I cannot remember what the add-ons/plugins were.

Hi AngieYaz , Thank you for your question, I understand that there are some issues with Firefox crashing after removing some plugins, and critical parts of the crash reporter. The Crash reporter essentially just submits the last couple of computations the browser made right before it crashes. It has system information like what OS version etc. For more information about what is shared you can check out any crash report on this url: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/home/.../Firefox
I mention this because when troubleshooting crashes this information gives a better clue as to what might be causing the crashes or if there is a bug already associated with the crash signature to check the status of where that bug is along to being fixed. If it does not send the reports I might recommend a clean reinstall so that it can report the crashes.
If that is not preferable I can recommend the general troubleshooting such as:
Is there a way to restore the data lost from the Crash Reporter, plus retrieve all my lost plugins and extensions?
Here are my top crashes.

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.
In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.
Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Only one crash report works for me:
- bp-f91028ac-fe6b-4913-b597-bf9d42150905
- Firefox 40.0.3 Crash Report [@ nsPluginInstanceOwner::Paint(tagRECT const&, HDC__*) ]
You didn't add the "bp-" prefix yourself?
You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:
- make sure you have the latest Flash version:
http://www.adobe.com/special/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html - check for updates for your graphics drive drivers
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration - disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
- disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
- disable hardware acceleration in Firefox
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
See also:
I did add them in.
If a line on the about:crashes page doesn't start with "bp-" then click the line to submit the report and the link will be updated and gets a "bp-" prefix if the report is submitted successfully. Please do not add the "bp-" prefix yourself.
Unfortunately the Crash reporter is only a report. The Extensions and Plugins, if they are missing from your profile will need to be reinstalled.
I wasn't awake when all this happened. :( Before then, Firefox was very stable.
I basically have the same problem ELizard had.

You deleted an extension and you want to get it back? What extension was it? How did it get deleted?
They were several important stability extensions; I believe -- and this is just from what I remember, some of them had "codec" in their names.
Additionally, three of my crashes on September 5 occurred a few hours apart from each other.

The first two IDs are invalid for some reason. The third is related to a plugin, but I can't tell which plugin triggered the crash.
Are the crashes you were having two weeks ago continuing?
I'm not sure any plugins or extensions are necessary for stability. A missing add-on may cause something in a page not to work, or a Firefox feature not to work, but it shouldn't cause a crash.
Yes, the crashes are continuing.
I first got Firefox in 2010. It didn't crash back then, so what's happening here?
Could you post a handful of the newest crash report IDs?
bp-382581a7-2bb8-4d7c-8b1d-e49ee6902119 is invalid. Please check it.
bp-dd2ddd7c-1b2a-4760-889f-374af6af1527 is also invalid.

Hi Angie, unfortunately none of those links works for me. When you click the links on the about:crashes page, do you get a detailed crash report? If so, please paste the URL from the address bar of the page since the codes do not seem to be "linkifying" correctly with a straight paste here.
Do Not add the bp yourself. Click the reports without bp to submit them.
Then post the information here.
