Thunderbird repeatedly loses connection with my outgoing server

Incoming mail is OK. I use both Gmail (works OK) and Cox for email. It will not connect to the Cox outgoing server. I have deleted and re-added the account several times. Once that worked and got my connection reestablished. Now that doesn't work. It calls for the outgoing server password which I enter but that doesn't work either. Can't send emails from my Cox account! Cox and gmail both work fine on my IPhone. Any suggestions on how to get Thunderbird to work properly with my Cox email? It used to work fine.
