How safe is it to use Firefox's "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" facility? Is it safe enough to use for my bank and credit card websites?

Only if this is on a password protect login user account otherwise there would be problems.
You should use a master password with sufficient strength for the MP and all passwords you store.
I've seen criticism that Firefox's encryption -- which is applied when you use a Master Password -- is not nearly as strong as third party products, so if you do not have good physical security of your computer, you might consider using a trustworthy add-on instead.
