As stated above, in win10 Firefox constantly freezes up. Sometimes closing and opening resolve for a while, other times not. Tried all the fixes, none worked. The freezing was more sporadic prior to the latest win10 update, much worse since. I have a win7 machine that never has problems. Both use Norton, both have same settings for browser and Norton security. Only difference is win10 vs win7. Hardware-wise the win10 machine has more resources, double the ram and an ssd, win7 machine less ram and hdd. The win10 machine should be better not worse.

What's the fix?

What version of Firefox are you using?

Would be advised if you aren't on the newest version to get on it and then see if that resolves the issue.

more options

It is the latest version - among other attempted fixes was uninstalling everything, cleaning up all file fragments, and reinstalling the newest version. Waste of time to get same results.

By freezing up, do you mean it's going unresponsive? It's laggy/choppy when playing a video?

Freezing as in just stops, moving cursor to x to close causes the screen to whiten and show the little blue circle going around. Several clicks on the red x finally gets the box to either wait for the program or close. Task manager spotty - sometimes it comes on and when click to close program screen goes black and need to pull the plug and reboot. No bugs, everything else works fine. Edge, IE11 etc. Just Firefox. Seems like win10 is deliberately screwing it up.

more options

No difference in safe mode. No extensions/add-ons to disable so likely why no difference there.

Many have reported issues using the 64bit Firefox. Install the 32bit version from; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

What about Bookmarks? I have looked at the change and found nothing about Bookmarks and making sure I can retain those.

This works but I read others whom did that but during updates it updated to 64bit instead.

Since safe mode doesn't work either then I say worse case fix would be to remove all firefox and deleting mozilla folder and then reinstall lastest firefox version based on your O/S bit version to fix the problem.

0. Backup bookmarks and write down your addons 1. download lastest firefox version bases on your O/S bit version aka 32bit to 32bit browser or 64bit to 64bit browser. 2. uninstall all firefox and delete mozilla folder 3. reboot 4. install downloaded firefox 5. run 6. then install your addons assuming they aren't legacy addons

This is what I did when going to FF57+ as I found out during that time just upgrading caused more problems then it fixed. This is what I did to get my firefox working again.

Sometimes that happens.

32 bit doesn't help. Nobody has addressed the win10 point - I have an old machine with win7, same Firefox version and exactly no problems. Just win10. It'll freeze so that I can't even get task manager up and have to unplug and reboot. Everything else is fine, scans are clean, just Firefox in win10.

Many Win 10 updates have caused issues.

When you unplug and reboot, did you run system scans to check for corrupt files?

No corrupt files, all scans clean.

No virus.

No add-ons at all to shut down.

No system resource constraints whether ram or cpu.

i use win10. there is one thing you have to think about- win10 OS is a massive ram hog. i have 4gb of ram and the OS and uninstallable junk takes up nearly half of my ram. sometimes in the past i have had to close firefox or clean all the cookies and cache. i cant really say i have had it unresponsive. maybe look at the system ram usage and see where its all going.

This is getting circular - all this has been looked at/tried. No hardware related issues - lots of ram and system resources, no excessive cpu usage. It always starts right up, maybe a second or so. Unlike Edge, I need to wait a minute or so after boot to use, after that, sporadic performance, sometimes freezing on the second or third web page, sometimes not until 10-15 minutes later. Uninstalling, cleaning all remaining files/fragments and reinstalling don't make any difference. I have zero add-ons.
