Whenever I try to play videos on some websites, it just doesn't allow me to, saying "Error loading media: File could not be played". It doesn't happen on Youtube. I tried some fixes from the internet like changing the value from "true" to "false" in media.directshow.enabled in the config, but there is no media.directshow.enabled in my config.

Hi Bradoj, your codec support looks strong, so unless the sites are serving something really unusual, Firefox should be able to play it.

Could you test a couple of those problem sites in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Hi bradoj,

Maybe you need this: Windows Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N and for Windows 7 KN:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968211

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546

Hope it helps. Thank You.

I have Windows 10 Home (64 bit), should I get the Win 10 version of Media Feature Pack or the Win 7 version?

You also could check which video codecs are supported in your Firefox at the moment. I have a test page here:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/sumo/html5-video.html

It says "This update does not apply to this computer". I checked if I downloaded the right version, and I did.

I also checked that Video Capabilities Test.

It's working now. Turns out it was caused by one of my (now disabled) extentions. Thanks for help, but any idea which one could cause that so I can notify the developer?

Hmm, hard to say, but only Audio Equalizer sounds like it would be interested in videos. You could enable/disable that one separately and see whether it makes any difference.
