it is on the left, along with the inbox sent etc.

I really don't think answering your question is going to help much though. I am guessing you have not received an email and have been told to check the junk.spam folder. Should your account be configured as POP you may well have two. One in Thunderbird and another maintained by your email provider in their webmail that has mail they are not even offering for download.
