The 'Reading & Display' options for opening emails dictate which option to use for a double click.

A single click will open messages in the Message Pane, if the Message Pane is enabled. A double click will open messages in a new tab.

YES, of course. Or, ⌘ O (command-O) Neither worked -- Messages opened in a new window. BUT... then, accidentally found this workaround -- - On main menu, click View ▶ Layout - From the top 3 options, select an UN-checked view - Open any message (it should open in a new tab) - Repeat the first step, selecting your original (or desired) view After doing this, I was surprised that messages now open correctly on tabs. Don't know why it worked; maybe forces a refresh of the setting?
