A few weeks ago after an automatic update I ended up having Thunderbird version 131.0.1 installed, I have no idea how this happened. On opening I get a message telling me I shouldn't be using a beta version and that I should revert to the latest general release version (128.4)

Today when I had some free time I downloaded 128.4 and installed it. On opening it it says that I can't use a profile file from a later version with the earlier version. Is there a way to recover from this WITHOUT having to set up the whole profile again from scratch.

Meanwhile I have done a system restore so I am back with 131.0.1 It has not given me any problems so far. Is there a new general release version imminent that will get me back on track?

I would appreciate any help I am not a computer expert, just a user, and find Thunderbird a very good email client.

Thanks for feedback. I would just install over the 131.  :)

David. I can't thank you enough for your help. I am now up and running again with the latest .esr version. I have now turned off automatic updates so I can hopefully control what happens in the future. I should just explain that my slow responses have been because I have been in/out of hospital a few times over the last month.

For any future reader of this thread I will just summarise the problem and the solution.

Problem. Automatic updates erroneously moved me from the .esr versions to the beta versions. Subsequently on every startup I got a message saying that I should not be using a beta version and that I should re-install the latest .esr version. Going backwards to a previous .esr version was not possible because the profile had changed and was not backwards compatible.

Solution. After a while a simple solution was found. First to simply install the latest .esr version (over the top of any beta version) Second, go into the default profile and delete the compatibility.ini file. As a future safeguard I have switched off automatic updates to stop the same problem happening again. I will get notified of new versions and then I can control what gets installed.
