I have firefox 3.6.13. When I click on an email or other source with an adobe attachment the browser defaults to adobe reader. I have adobe acrobat pro 9 on my computer. I often get black screens when the attachment tries to show in the Reader, but it always works correctly in acrobat pro. How do I reset the browser default pointer to open all adobe attachments and documents in adobe acrobat pro rather than the reader?

This didn't help. I had already tried this. In Firefox 7, even when I specified Acrobat in Firefox, it continued to default to Adobe Reader.

In earlier versions of Firefox, you could copy the nppdf32.dll file from Acrobat into the Mozilla Firefox plugins directory, but this no longer changes the default in Firefox 7.

I was not able to figure out how Firefox 7 prioritized which reader to use, and so couldn't figure out how to change my priority preference. I ultimately had to completely uninstall Adobe Reader from my system to get it to use Acrobat Pro.

If there's a better solution, I am still interested.

You can create a plugins folder in the Firefox profile folder and copy the plugin file to that folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

You can enable and disable individual plugins on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.
