Videos not playing
For the first time ever since using Firefox, beginning in just the past two days, I can't get videos to play.
Currently, videos do seem to be playing in YouTube.

Apologize for the delay in reporting but the issue was resolved. Followed EdrickV's suggestion to disable hdwr acceleration. Since then 14.0.1 was released and I installed it. Think I tested the new version by re-enabling hdwr accel., thinking that the new version might have been designed in part to address the Flash video problem. Seems that vids were playing OK initially but evidently the problem reoccurred and I'm now running w/out hdwr accel. Anybody else experiencing this still? When will I be able to re-enable h.a.?

Possibly YouTube also offers HTML5 video.
IF your problems are with FlashPlayer 11.3 that COULD be a known issue, currently affecting Firefox on Windows Vista or later.
Flash & Firefox developers have been working on the problem for a few days but whilst official advice updates seem to have dried up the currently recommended solution is to use Adobe's uninstaller to remove Flash 11.3 and then to install FlashPlayer 10.3or 11.2. Full instructions are included in flash 11.3 crashes
Thanks for the update. I've also tried (and am currently) working with Flash 11.2. Still no video.
Can you please keep me apprised of any developments?
Does at least the flash player is shown as installed on the Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and on the about:plugins page?
Possibly you have some other problem that will need sorting out, but this ongoing problem with Firefox 1213 and FlashPlayer 11.3 is likely to complicate matters.
Ordinarily Firefox staff have recently been providing comments and updates on breaking issues like this, but for some reason comments on Flash 11.3 issues suddenly stopped leaving us guessing at what is going on.
Have a look at the standard advice, but modify it by remembering Flash 11.3 may NOT be a good idea until a permanent fix is made somehow for this problem

"but this ongoing problem with Firefox 12 ..."
I noted in my issue report that I'm using Firefox 13.0.1. Did you mis-type? Also, I'm currently using Flash 11.2 precisely to avoid any problems from 11.3.
"Does at least the flash player is shown as installed on the Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and on the about:plugins page?"
Nope. Shockwave is listed but not Flash. Where's the "about:plugins page" you referred to?
You can open about:xxxx pages via the location (address) bar like you open a website.
But if you do not see the Flash plugin on the about:addons page then it won't show on about:plugins as well.
Try to uninstall and reinstall Flash (run the installer Administrator via the right-click context menu).
You can find the latest Flash player for Firefox on this page.
If you can't get Flash 11.3 to work then you can try to revert to Flash 11.2 or Flash 10.3. You can download the Flash 11.2 player via this direct link:
Thanks for helping me find about:plugins. However, Flash isn't present. As I said before, I went through the Flash 11.3 uninstall and eventually reinstalled to 11.2 (even tried running under 10.3 first). Any new ideas are welcome. Maybe John will have something to say to my reply to him...
Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
See:
Sorry I did miss type I meant Firefox 13 not firefox 12. cor-elis probably following the details of this issue a lot more closely than I am doing and is more experienced than me.
The Flash Plugin for FlashPlayer is called Shockwave Flash for historic reasons and that is the name you see when you look in the plugins manager page.
Because many of the support support questions I have seen over the last week or so asking about video have tended to relate to the Flash 11.3 issue I have been tending to mention that as the most likely cause and solution. In your case maybe the primary problem is something else.
Did you try on one of the Adobe test pages e.g.
- http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ & http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html
- also note http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-113-crash-mozilla.html
Those tests actually run FlashPlayer in the browser and identify the version. Also note that there is a separate application needed to use FlashPlayer in IE. It is quite possible to inadvertently have differing versions of Flash player installed in IE & Firefox.
There seems a degree of controversy at present, apparently there may be problems on some downgrades if the Adobe unistaller is not used, but also there are problems when the Uninstaller is used; as it may uninstall and change more than is expected.
To further complicate matters merely having some Real Player software installed even if not in use may have an effect on part of this issue.
New Profiles
I personally tend not to recommend the new reset feature introduced on Firefox 13. It is easy to use that is its great advantage, I am just uneasy about it being too easy to use and potential information loss or security problems and proposed changes in new versions of this.
Manually creating new and using new profiles is not straightforward, which is why the new reset was introduced.
Visited the sites you recommended. Installed 11.3 (the right one: for browsers like Ff that use plug-ins. Later checked plug-ins and saw both 11.3 AND the 11.2 I'd been working with. Disabled 11.2. Still no vids opening.
"Also note that there is a separate application needed to use FlashPlayer in IE. It is quite possible to inadvertently have differing versions of Flash player installed in IE & Firefox." - I wonder if Adobe is set to automatically update to the latest version of Flash from my Windows settings (how would I check for that?), and did so for IE (9), which I retain as a backup/alternative browser on my task bar. IE isn't set as my default, btw.
On your advice, haven't tried the reset again (I did before, not sure what it did, unless it was to create a new profile). If I do create a new profile (Run-type Firefox.exe-p etc.), should I uninstall Flash 11.3 first? I'll probably follow cor-el's advice (see above) and check for corrupted files reappearing, but how could I prevent it in the first place?
Also, as I said a while back, I'm pretty sure I don't have RealPlayer on my PC.
Thanks again for sticking with this. I'm sure it's going to be something simple.
P.S. I have a second laptop that runs through the same router. I use Firefox on it as well. It uses XP and has Flash 11.3 loaded. So far no problems with vids. Thought I should mention that.
We'll need some more info about your Firefox setup. Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information then click Copy all to Clipboard. Open a reply to this post, and go to Edit > Paste to paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.

I thought the troubleshooting info listed enabled plugins but if not they are listed in about:plugins and there is a link from the troubleshooting page to that. Please
- also list the plugins firefox shows, saying which are enbled ?
- use http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html from firefox and say what version of flash that reports?
- and confirm it gives no error message ?
- you say "... Installed 11.3 (the right one: for browsers like Ff that use plug-ins. Later checked plug-ins and saw both 11.3 AND the 11.2 I'd been working with. Disabled 11.2."
- obviously Flash videos will not play if Flash Player is disabled
- NOTE we recommend NOT using flash 11.3 even if it is the latest version for Windows, that is precisely the issue we are attempting to avoid. Flash 11.3 is a problem on Firefox 13 Windows.
Once you have reviewed the following, let me know what steps I should take to start viewing videos with Firefox.
Here are my enabled plugins (copied and pasted from link in troubleshooting):

That looks ok asfar as the Flash version is concerned.
Did you try the Adobe test site to confirm FlashPlayer works ok as far as their test is concerned.
IT may turn out that you have a separate or additional problem but it helps to know the results from the Adobe test sites.
Not clear what to do to initiate the test on the test sites you referred to i.e.:
"Did you try on one of the Adobe test pages e.g.
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ & http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html - when I went to this site it looks like by landing on the page I should see the Flash version "in the box below." There's a blank space then a box/table listing the latest versions of Flash. Is the blank space between the text and the version table saying that it doesn't recognize my Flash 10.3? also note http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-113-crash-mozilla.html
Those tests actually run FlashPlayer in the browser and identify the version. Also note that there is a separate application needed to use FlashPlayer in IE. It is quite possible to inadvertently have differing versions of Flash player installed in IE & Firefox."

Not clear what to do to initiate the test
Just click on the links using Firefox (or IE). The displayed results indicate what is working in the browser that is used to open the site, so try using both browsers and compare the results.
Well, as I said, no results are displayed when I go to the helpx site using Firefox (and plugins already verified I'm using 10.3). I tried the helpx site with IE 9 and still no result showed.
To be clear, was your answer to my question about how to initiate the test: simply click on the hyperlink and see what happens?
