If the latest version of Firefox is 17, why did I get prompted to update to 14.0.1 when I am currently running version 12?

I am running Windows 7 64-bit OS, and I currently have version 12 of Firefox installed (updated in May). I am building an OS vs Browser compatibility matrix, so I have been doing a bit of 'Googling' today to see what versions of Firefox are currently being supported. When I opened Firefox to see if I was running the latest version, I received a prompt to update to 14.0.1, yet the latest version is 17. This is causing me some confusion. Also, some websites are suggesting the Firefox 64-bit is not supported in WIndows and others are saying that it is in deed supported. Could someone please either confirm or deny this?

How often have you run Firefox in the past 4 months? Do recall every postponing that update? If that updater was previously downloaded but never installed, perhaps the installer wants to complete that job before checking for a newer version.

Mozilla does not release a 64-bit version of Firefox for Windows. The 32-bit version runs fine on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

There is a third party 64-bit build named Waterfox that you could look into, but I suspect any gain in the ability to use memory would be offset by reduced compatibility with add-ons...

Thank you for your help. I will update to the latest version anyway. I haven't utilized FireFox in a long time and I only tend to use it when in the throes of regression testing so that will explain why I am currently running an older version, and I don't have automatic updates selected. It is entirely possible that I did in fact download 14.0.1 but did not install it, however I have no recollection of that.

Also cheers for confirming that 64-bit is not supported for Windows. You have cleared up both ambiguities I was experiencing. Hopefully I wont come across too many more during my analysis.
