Restore Firefox bookmark backup doesn´t work (with firefox backup tool 1.0) Help :-(
Hello, i have a big problem with restoring my Firefox bookmarks and passwords with " Firefox Backup Tool" Its a "....fbk" file.
My laptop had some problems so i made a new system set up. Backup with "Mozbackup" didn´t work.( Error message) so i used "Firefox Backup Tool 1.0" for backup all my bookmarks. The program said "backup succesful" and i got a 12mb ..fbk file. But when i tried restoring it, it says "restore successful" but there is nothing in Firefox when i start the program and look for the bookmarks. :-( I tried it over 10 times and older versions.. Firefox 23 or 3.6 etc.... nothing works.
Can someone help me to get my bookmarks back? Or can i open the jpk file manually and copy it in firefox?
thanks.
Anna

Hi Annaberlin, depending on how the restore works, your old settings may be on your system as a separate profile folder. Could you take a look here:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
When you get the listing for your personal settings folder, make a note of the partially-random name of the current folder up in the address bar. Then click the word Profiles to move up a level. Do you see any additional folders that might be your restored settings?

See this option "browser.bookmarks.restore_default_bookmarks" on "about:config", its value must be false, if it is true change to false
case a solution above doesnt work, could you upload the jpk file?
Hello and thanks for your answer but it doesn´t solved the problem. The value is "false" . But i made a mistake.. it´s not a "jbk" file its a ".FBK" file. Sorry.
I think uploading the file isn´t a good idea...i saved all my web passwords together with the bookmarks so everyone could download it here :-(
Try open the file with NotePad
Click on the file with right mouse button then click on "open with" and select "notepad"
I opened it with notepad and there a many pages with a unreadable ( at least with notepad) code.. numbers and characters.
try to get a old version Firefox, then restore the bookmarks, then update to a new version
Hi Annaberlin,
sorry you are having problems.
"firefox backup tool 1.0" AFAIK is third party software a Windows utility. I can easily find adverts, download offers, and even an unistall instruction. We do not support that tool on this forum.
I can find references to .fbk files but I am not sure they are the same type as the ones you have.
You would do best to ask on the support site for that software or failing that a general Windows or other Firefox support site.
You would have done better asking for advice here before trying to use this software.
Normally this thread would be closed as being outside the scope of this forum, however as it is causing a problem with Firefox I am happy to leave it open whilst others attempt to identify the actual file type and and a suitable support site or documentation, if it exists !
I have made the assumption that you do not still have
- the working old laptop
- or the Hard Disk Drive (hdd) out of it (still in its original state)
I guess the hdd is reformatted or dead, and the same with the old laptop.
We may be able to help If you still have
- any original media with the old Firefox on it,
- other backups or disk images
- other backups of Firefox profiles or bookmarks

Glad Jeff's solution worked for you.
Now may be good time to ensure you also have backups available easily in future.
Possibly you could consider in future doing manual backups of your bookmarks and maybe also your profile. At least you would easily get help with that.
- Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer_manual-backup
- Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles
Or use this addon which I at one time tried, I know others have recommended it, and it is hosted on the official Addons site.
