I click on Firefox on my dock and it does not come up, the only way I can get it is to go to the firefox toolbar and select Firefox preferences, then I have the Firefox page and I can continue

Have you tried removing it from the Dock and starting it form the Applications folder (I guess you're on a Mac)?

The link on the Dock could be corrupt.
