The format on my Thunderbird has changed so that there is no way to create a new message and I can't access my trash or sent pages. Something is very wrong.

Please send a screesnhot of the problem 'format' (with personal info blacked out) so we can see what problems there are. A new message can be created by using Ctrl+N. It can be sent by Ctrl+Enter.
It does sound like you've altered the layout if your folders are not visible. Go to View (or press 'Alt' if you can't see 'View)/Layout and click on 'Folder Pane'
