Why are trash and sent messages not visible

I used to be able to access my trash and sent messages. Access to both was visible on Thunderbird's main page. No longer. What's going on?

Are the folder not visible? Or the contents?

Neither the folders nor contents are visible.

Is the account IMAP or POP? This sounds like an IMAP account that can not connect to the server. The failed synchronization causes the folder that can not be synchronized to disappear, other than the inbox
